Trutta ‘Streamside’ Shiraz
Trutta ‘Streamside’ Shiraz
Trutta ‘Streamside’ Shiraz | Harcourt, Victoria | 2020
Taste: Organically farmed Shiraz that is made for guzzling. Carbonically macerated and blended with a touch of Marsanne; this wine has heaps of bright fruit including strawberries and raspberries along with notes of cherry cola and a sprinkle of green peppery spice.
And in case you wondered… Carbonic maceration means the grapes fermented in a closed vat which is rich in carbon dioxide. This technique results in fermentation starting from inside the grape causing the fruit to eventually burst and give softer fruit flavours along with less bitter tannins.
Mood: In the words of Winemaker Jake Winther, ‘The ultimate fly-fishing wine. Chuck it in the river and enjoy chilled at the end of your day. And if fishing ain’t up your alley, Soph reckons ocean or pool side are the second-best options.
Grass Roots and Chi: Jake Winther is the guy behind these wines. Devoted to Central Victoria, Jake is a small-scale producer making some high-quality wines from grapes that are grown on the traditional lands of the Dia Dia Wurrung people. He acknowledges the Dia Dia Wurrong people to be the custodians of this patch of earth and respectfully grows his grapes organically in order to continue nurturing the lands.
In the winery he continues to practice hands off, making minimal intervention wines that are unfiltered and not fined.
‘Trutta’ is a family name and is inspired by the pioneering spirit of Jakes’ ancestors, who left Cornwall (Soph’s home) for the gold rush hills of Gippsland in the 19th Century. (Possibly why Soph has a soft spot for these guys, obvs…along with their winemaking skills too.
