Le Petit Mort Qvevri Gentil | Granite Belt, QLD | 2020

Taste: Made with a blend of 50% Gewurztraminer (‘Guh-Voorts-Trah-Mee-Ner’) and 50% Muscat to create a wildly aromatic wine. The juice has fermented on its skins for 5 months in clay vessels giving it complex flavours of dried apricot, honey, mineral and lychee with a textural viscous body and a fresh, chalk like, drying finish. It’s fresh, fleshy and frisky with some delicious power behind its pretty amber appearance!

Fun Fact: The name and inspiration for this wine was drawn from the home of Orange wines; Georgia. In Georgian, Amphora (the clay vessels they ferment wine in) translates to “Qvevri.”

Oh and in case you wondered; Orange wines are not made from oranges but are White wines that have been left to ferment entirely on their skins to dryness.

Mood: These bold Orange wines deserve bold, spicy foods. Try Moroccan curries, Indian spices and for those that love Kimchi – this is the wine to match it. Let us know how you go!

Grass Roots and Chi: Le Petit Mort is a small experimental operation based in the Granite Belt in Queensland.  Queensland? (I hear you ask) and yes, we agree, it’s not exactly the first region that springs to mind when it comes to wine but Le Petit Mort are demonstrating exactly why we need to step outside the box and try wines from these relatively unknown wine regions.

With only 5ha of land under vine, Winemaker Glen Robert and his partner (and viticulturist) Robert Richter are showing us what this region can offer as they continue to follow their own rules, planting interesting grape varieties that are outside the norm.

They approach their vineyard maintenance with a minimal and considered approach, intervening only when necessary and using only organic products when doing so.

Drink now and until 2023. Vegan Friendly.
